Top 10 Non Sporting Trophies and Awards

Today trophies and awards are presented to people for a variety of different reasons. As well as those that are received for sporting achievements like gold, silver and bronze Olympic medals. There are various non sporting ones that can be presented as well. Below we take a look at what we consider to be the top 10 non sporting trophies and awards given today.

1. Academy Awards - Also more commonly referred to as the Oscars people involved in the world of movies would like to be presented with one of these human stylized awards. Normally the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will give these out in March each year and is one of the longest running award ceremonies in the world today.

2. Hugo Awards - Named after Hugo Gernsbeck who founded science fiction magazine Amazing Stories is presented each year to those who have produced in the previous year the best fantasy or science fiction works. This of the top 10 non sporting trophies and awards given out has been presented each year since 1955.

3. Victoria Cross - There are many medals that military personnel in the UK and the Commonwealth Countries can be presented with but the highest decoration that has been awarded is the Victoria Cross. This is the one that will be presented to such members of the armed forces who have shown extreme bravery when faced with their enemy. The medal was introduced in 1856 and since then awarded to 1,353 individuals. However, after the Second World War only a further 13 of these medals have been awarded to members of the British and Australian army.

4. Military Cross - Unlike the Victoria Cross this one will be presented to members of both the British and Commonwealth Armed Forces in recognition when it is shown that the person carried out an act or acts of exemplary gallantry during the time of an active operation against an enemy. In some cases since 1979 there have been cases where this particular medal has been awarded to someone posthumously.

5. George Cross - This particular non sporting trophy is presented to civilians as well as to members of the UK and Commonwealths armed forces. This is one that is presented to those who perform an act of bravery whilst not in conflict and is the counterpart of the Victoria Cross.

6. Queens Gallantry Medal - This medal came into being in 1974 and replaced the Colonial Police Medal for Gallantry, The British Empire Medal for Gallantry and the British Empire for Gallantry medals. This is a medal that is awarded to both civilian and military personnel who have carried out an act of extreme bravery.

7. BAFTA's - Just like the Oscars these are presented annually but are to cover all genres of film and television making. Whereas the Oscar is a miniature human the BAFTA's take the shape of a theatrical mask and were designed by Mitzi Cunliffe and American sculptor back in 1955.

8. BRIT Awards - Most often called the BRITS these are presented each year by the British Phonographic Industry to those involved in the world of music. This is a show that is watched by millions each year not only to see their favorite singers perform but to see how badly the show is presented.

9. Nobel Peace Prize - This is probably along with the Oscars the most well recognized of the top 10 non sporting trophies and awards presented. Each year the Nobel committee produces a short list of candidates for this honor. There have been some well known names that have received this prize such as Nelson Mandela and which was bequeathed by the Swedish Industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel.

10. The Man Booker Prize -When it comes to this top 10 non sporting trophies and awards it is presented to one author who a committee feel has produced an outstanding novel in the English language. The people who are entitled to be nominated for this prize must prove to be a citizen of the UK, Commonwealth, Ireland and Zimbabwe. Yet even if an author does not receive this coveted prize they feel just as honored to be nominated for it. - 29858
